Unbelievable But True: Dirty Windows Can Cause Illness!
Who knew? Of all the reasons we like having clean windows, one of the least known is that by keeping your windows clean, you can avoid getting certain illnesses! Seems this reason should be a priority.
How dirty windows affect the inside of your home…
Colds, flu, and allergies, are usually started by exposure to viruses, and you might be surprised to know that when your windows are clean, the virus load in your home is lowered. When your windows are clean, they allow more light, specifically ultraviolet light into your home. That type of light is a disinfectant that can kill some bacteria that is already in your house. Research has shown that rooms with windows that allow a good amount of ultraviolet light in have fewer bacteria and viruses floating around. Dirty windows can reduce the amount of natural light by about 40%.
Cleaning your windows on a regular basis, helps eliminate the dust that builds up and attracts dust mites which, due to their feces that is left behind can cause allergic and respiratory reactions.
If your windows become grimy, certain nitrogen compounds that are found in smog, can be introduced into your home…you certainly don’t want that where you live!
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is another reason to keep your windows clean, especially in the winter or darker months of the year. There are thousands of people affected by these darker months and the reduced amount of light, as they suffer with depression and anxiety. Clean windows that allow 40% more natural light in is a good way to fight this mood disorder.
Dirty outside windows can affect your health also…
If you haven’t had your outside windows cleaned regularly, mold and mildew can develop, when this happens, their spores can enter your home allowing pathogens, that can lead to illness, enter your home.
When birds “bomb” your windows, they are leaving behind the possibility of up to 60 different diseases, such as yeast infection, respiratory disease, illness that is linked to respiratory conditions and allergies.
Obviously cleaning your windows regularly isn’t the cure-all for all of the illnesses you contract, but it’s a good place to start.
